Norfolk State Women’s Basketball ranks Top-5 in Several NCAA Statistical Categories to conclude the season

NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State University women’s basketball team finished the 2022-23 season ranked in the top-five in five different statistical categories at the conclusion of the basketball season.

NSU led the country in two categories, including Scoring Defense and Field Goal Percentage Defense. On average, the Spartans would not allow their opponents to score more than 50.7 points per game, while holding teams field goal shooting percentage to 31.5%.

Additionally, Norfolk State sat fifth in the final standings in Steals Per Game, Turnovers Forced Per Game, and Three Point Percentage Defense. NSU averaged 12.1 steals per game while forcing 21.97 turnovers from its opponents throughout the season. Niagara, out if the MAAC, led the nation in steals with 15.2 per game and forced turnovers per game at 28.06.

The Spartans held their opponents three point shooting throughout the season to an average of 25.2% while the national leaders, FDU sat at 22.1%.

The 2022-23 Spartan women’s basketball team won the programs first MEAC Championship Title since 2002. Head Coach Larry Vickers was named the 2022-23 MEAC and BOXTORROW Coach of the Year. Vickers coached back-to-back MEAC Defensive Player of the Year in Camille Downs. Downs and Deja Francis were named BOXTORROW All-Americans after helping lead the Spartans to a 26-7 season and an NCAA First Round appearance.
