Most Americans prepare to file their tax returns early in the year; like around October or November. Others take their sweet time gathering all the necessary receipts, records and other important documents, only to dump them on the desks of accountants and certified tax prep associates. How can you get ahead of the game this tax season? The Balance offers some much-needed tips on how to prepare yourself for the upcoming tax season and how you can gain control of what is normally a stressful time of year.

The IRS will officially start accepting tax returns for the 2017 tax year on January 29. (That’s later than last year’s date of January 23, as the IRS has had to scramble to adjust to the new provisions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that was passed at the very tail end of 2017.)
