2021 marks the 45th anniversary of President Gerald Ford’s official recognition of Black History Month. Originally conceived in 1926 as Negro History Week by American historian and scholar Carter G. Woodson, the recognition and celebration of Black History has spread to numerous countries including Ireland, Netherlands, Canada and the United Kingdom. In 2016, President Barack Obama led the opening ceremony for the The National Museum of African American History and Culture, an official Smithsonian Museum on the National Mall in Washington D.C. Due to the ongoing pandemic restrictions, the museum building is closed, however, you can visit museum resources and archives online.
