Emmett Adair and Jordan Stiemke combined for 50 points as Loyola University Maryland defeated Coppin State 95-84 in a high-scoring crosstown matchup Sunday evening at Reitz Arena.
The Greyhounds (4-5) opened with a five-point run before Tay Hall scored for the Eagles (2-8). Both teams struggled early, resulting in several turnovers and a tied score at the first media timeout. Loyola then initiated a decisive 17-6 run midway through the first half, led by Stiemke’s three consecutive three-pointers.
Coppin State tightened its defense, reducing the deficit to one by the final media timeout of the half. The teams exchanged baskets for the remainder of the half, with Loyola leading 41-39 at halftime.
Stiemke led all scorers in the first half with 15 points for Loyola, going 3 for 4 from the three-point line. Chris Morgan led CSU with 10 points, going 5 for 5 from the field in the first half.
Loyola increased its lead early in the second half by improving its defense and scoring in the paint. By the first media timeout, the Greyhounds led 59-49.
Following the timeout, Hassan Perkins scored twice for CSU, narrowing the gap to 62-58. Loyola responded with three-pointers from Braeden Speed and Tyson Commander, extending the lead to 12 by the under-8 media timeout. Adair added two crucial three-pointers to secure the victory.
Perkins led Coppin State with 19 points. Morgan, Tyler Koenig, and Nelson Lamizana each contributed 11 points, while Jamari Piercy added 10. Stiemke led Loyola with 21 points, and Jacob Theodosiou added 18.
Coppin State will visit West Virginia on Wednesday, while Loyola will travel to Hampton.
