Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock earned 51% of the vote to defeat Republican challenger, former NFL star, Herschel Walker. Warnock’s win secures a Democrat majority (51-49) in the US Senate.

3.5 million Georgia residents voted in Tuesday’s election, with over 1.8 million early voters. Warnock won his first runoff election against Republican Senator Kelly Loeffler in January 2021, making him the first Black U.S. senator from Georgia. Reverand Warnock is a Senior Pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, the famed home church of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

“I’ll work with anyone to get things done for the people of Georgia,” Warnock said, acknowledging the need to win over GOP-leaning independents and moderate Republicans.

On the campaign trail, Warnock focused on what he’s been able to achieve in his short time in office, including a provision to cap insulin costs for Medicare patients, infrastructure deals, and a bipartisan maternal health bill. Georgia has the worst maternal mortality ratio of any state in the country.
