Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company enters its 20th year: “It’s a great time in Pittsburgh for the arts” yet, still “the struggle continues” for Black arts.

Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company performs August Wilson's “Jitney" at Shady Side Academy Senior School in September.

Urban Media Today is excited to continue its series highlighting the Heinz Endowment Cultural Treasure Initiative Award Winners. Like Heinz, we are inspired by each organization’s work and commitment to Black creativity and cultural legacy. For our latest and first video feature, Urban Media’s own Kiki Brown spoke with Mark Clayton Southers, Founder & Producing Artistic Director of The Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Co. The company’s mission is “to produce the works of local racially and culturally diverse playwrights as well as Pittsburgh themed plays. We provide a nurturing environment for all who work on and off the stage, and build and serve a culturally diverse audience that can strengthen our civic community.”
