           Bison Pick up First win of the Season 

BALTIMORE (November 9, 2019) – Howard University women’s basketball team earned its first win of the season after taking down UMBC, 72-61, in Baltimore.

The Lady Bison improve to 1-1 on the season  while the Retrievers dropped to 1-1 .

Third-year sharpshooter Jayla Thornton (Newark, N.J.) led all scorers with 20 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the field.

Howard jumped out the gate shooting over 56-percent (9-of-16) from the floor in the first period, but UMBC fought back and pulled within five at the break, 35-30.After intermission, the Retrievers shot only 29-percent (5-of-17) in the third while HU shot a respectable 47-percent (8-of-17); thus, outscoring UMBC, 20-11, and taking a 55-41 advantage after three.

In the fourth, UMBC outscored Howard, 20-17, but the contest was out-of-reach in favor of the Bison.Redshirt junior Jayla Myles (Rochester, N.Y.) notched her first double-double of the season, producing 11 boards and 10 points, while seniors Sarah Edmond (Freeport, N.Y.) and Ayonna Williams (Washington) netted 16 points and 14 points.Te’yJah Oliver and Janee’a Summers combined for 30 points to lead UMBC in a losing effort.

 

Tuesday (Nov. 12), Howard wraps up its brief two-game road swing in Tampa, Fla. to face South Florida. The action starts 7 p.m.
