For the first time since 2019, Howard University Men’s Basketball Head Coach, and 2023 John McLendon National Coach of the Year, Kenneth Blakeney is thrilled to announce the return of summer basketball camps to Burr Gymnasium.
This year, the camps will be run in partnership with US Sports Camps (USSC), the official provider of Nike Sports Camps. This groundbreaking partnership is the first HBCU partnership for Nike Sports Camps.
“US Sports Camps is delighted to bring our first HBCU partnership with the Howard men’s basketball team. Kenny Blakeney is an excellent college coach, and we are thrilled to have him as a partner,” said Seth Roberts, senior director of basketball at US Sports Camps. “He will lead the basketball camp and positively impact the greater DC community by teaching young athletes the game of basketball as well as important life skills.”
The Nike Boys Basketball Camp at Howard University provides extensive opportunities for developing on-court skills, teamwork, sportsmanship and perseverance from one of the most respected and decorated head coaches in college basketball.
In addition to winning the McClendon Award, Coach Blakeney was also honored as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Coach of the Year, Eastern College Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and HBCU All-Star Game Coach of the Year. A testament to the program’s strength, the men’s basketball team won the 2023 MEAC Tournament for the first time since 1992 and participated in the NCAA Tournament.
“When I was young, one of the things I looked forward to most was summer basketball camp. It allowed me to develop my skills, compete and make new friends. When I became a head coach, I wanted these camps to be a crucial facet of our program identity,” said Blakeney. “Providing these outlets for kids in the DC community can be life-changing; it certainly was for me. COVID-19 forced us to cancel our programs the last few summers, which makes me even more excited for their return. We aim to provide the best Nike Sports Camp experience in the DMV.”
