Steelers QB Dwayne Haskins Tragically Killed in Accident

Pittsburgh Steelers Quarterback Dwayne Haskins was tragically killed This morning. He was 24 years old. FHP spokesperson Lt. Indiana Miranda said Haskins was pronounced dead at the scene.
Per The Florida Highway Patrol, it confirmed to CBS News Miami that the pedestrian who was struck and killed by a dump truck on I-595 early Saturday morning was indeed Haskins. “He was attempting to cross the westbound lanes of Interstate 595 when there was oncoming traffic,” Miranda said in an emailed statement.
Miranda did not say why Haskins was on the highway at the time. The accident caused the highway to be shut down for several hours, and Miranda said it is “an open traffic homicide investigation.”

The young QB was in Florida training with new Steelers QB Mitch Tribusky, RB Najee Harris and other players this week.
“I am devastated and at a loss for words with the unfortunate passing of Dwayne Haskins,” Tomlin’s statement read. “He quickly became part of our Steelers family upon his arrival in Pittsburgh and was one of our hardest workers, both on the field and in our community. Dwayne was a great teammate, but even more so a tremendous friend to so many. I am truly heartbroken.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Kalabrya, and his entire family during this difficult time.”-Said Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin in a statement.

After a storied career at Ohio State in which he set Big Ten single season records for passing yards (4,831), touchdown passes (50) and total offensive yards (4,939), and twenty-eight school records, Haskins was drafted 15th overall in 2019 by Washington where he played for two seasons before signing a Futures contract with the Steelers in 2021. After a backup QB Preseason battle with Mason Rudolph, Haskins served as the third string QB for the 2021 season. In the offseason, he signed a 1-year deal with the team.
“The loss of Dwayne is beyond tragic and extremely difficult to process,” Ohio State head coach Ryan Day said on Twitter. “For those who knew him closely, he was much more than a great football player. He had a giant heart, old soul, and an infectious smile. The Ohio State community and our entire football program are heartbroken.”

“I am absolutely heartbroken to hear the news of the passing of Dwayne Haskins Jr.” said Washington Head Coach Ron Rivera. “Dwayne was a talented young man who had a long life ahead of him. This is a very sad time, and I am honestly at a loss for words.”

The NFL family mourns the tragic loss of Dwayne Haskins, and we extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. -Said the National Football League in a statement.
Several Steelers also gave their condolences via Twitter: “Devastated.” Said Rudolph.
“Dwayne meant so much to so many people,” said DT Cam Heyward. “His smile was infectious, and he was a guy you wanted to be around. We are all in shock about losing him.”
“The world lost a great person today,” Said LB T.J. Watt, “When Dwayne first walked into the locker room, I could tell he was an upbeat guy. He was always making people smile, never taking life for granted. His impact on me will last forever.”
“I only had the privilege to know D-Hask for a short time, but in that time, I got to meet a young man that didn’t seem to ever have a bad day,” Said retired Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger “He came to work every day with a smile on his face and energy and love in his heart. I really enjoyed his passion and love for the game and wanting to learn and be the best.”
Haskins is survived by his wife, Kalabrya, parents Dwayne Sr. and Tamara, and a younger sister, Tamia.
