Here’s what’s happening in the World of Sports….
National Football League
- Steelers Make Roster Moves-The Pittsburgh Steelers signed two tryout players that participated in the team’s rookie mini-camp, it was announced Tuesday. The two additions to the roster are linebacker Matt Galambos and tight end Phazahn Odom. To make room on the 90-man roster, the Steelers released cornerback Devonte Johnson and tight end Ryan Malleck.
- Steelers Rookie Mini-Camp Ends-A total of 51 rookies attended Steelers rookie mini-camp which includes 6 former Pitt Panthers (RB James Conner, TE Scott Orndoff, S Terrish Webb, K Chris Blewitt, S Reggie Mitchell and LB Matt Galambos) and a former Panther (WVU RB Rushel Shell) it was a combination of draft picks, undrafted free agents, and try-outs. Next up will be the regular team’s minicamp before training camp in July.
- Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger seriously considered retirement-That is, according to former Steelers OT Willie Colon who told sports talk show PFT Live that the Steelers Pro-Bowl QB wasn’t just ‘all-talk’ when he was considering retirement after the 2016 season. “I got to sit down and talk to him and one thing he told me is he did take it seriously,” Colon said. “He’s dealt with a lot of injuries.” Colon also mentioned that the strength of his offensive line will determine if Big Ben will consider playing in 2018.
- Pacman pleads guilty, apologizes for behavior- Bengals cornerback Adam Jones pleaded guilty Tuesday to a single misdemeanor charge from an altercation after two other charges were dropped as part of a plea agreement.
- Seahawks Perfect Place for Kaepernick-Defensive end Michael Bennett said Tuesday that Seattle would be the “perfect place” for quarterback Colin Kaepernick to sign. Seahawks Head Coach Pete Carroll also said free agent Quarterbacks Robert Griffin III, and Kaepernick is options to back up starting QB Russell Wilson.
National Basketball League
- Eastern Conference Final is Set-With the Boston Celtics beating the Washington Wizards in Game 7 Monday Night, defending NBA Champion Cleveland finally has an opponent in this year’s Eastern Conference Final as they will take on those Celtics led by NBA MVP Candidate Isaiah Thomas. The matchup begins Wednesday at 8:30 in Cleveland.
- Abdul-Jabbar says ‘One and Done’ wrong for basketball-NBA Great Kareem Abdul-Jabar says that former UCLA HC John Wooden would have disliked how the one-and-done era has changed the college basketball game that the Bruins ruled under Wooden. “He wouldn’t have been able to do it now,” Abdul-Jabbar said Monday in an interview at The Associated Press headquarters. “It’s a totally different circumstance now. Kids aren’t going to college to get an education and play ball. It’s one or the other.”
Major League Baseball
- Jeter gets number retired by NY Yankees-In a special ceremony over the weekend, the NY Yankees honored former SS Derek Jeter by retiring his #2 and putting a plaque of him in their Great Hall. Jeter’s #2 is the 21st number retired by the franchise and is the final single digit to be honored by the Yankees.
- Pirates-Despite their 3-game winning streak, the Pittsburgh Pirates still find themselves in last place, 3 games behind surprising 5th place Chicago. The team knows they have to keep the wins coming if they’re to get out of a spot that they haven’t been in since their 105-loss team in 2010.
College Basketball
- Pitt to Host Montana and UC-Santa Barbara in Legends Classic -The University of Pittsburgh men’s basketball team will host Montana (Monday, Nov. 13) and UC-Santa Barbara (Wednesday, Nov. 15) in opening round games of the 11th annual Legends Classic as announced Tuesday. Game times and television designations for opening round games will be announced at a later date. Pitt opens the 2017-18 season Friday, Nov. 10 at Navy in the Veterans Classic before returning to the Petersen Events Center for the two Legends Classic contests.
National Hockey League
- Pens beat Capitals 1-0; even series–Thanks to a late goal by forward Phil Kessell and superb goaltending by G Marc-Andre Fluery, the Pittsburgh Penguins have evened their Best-of-Seven Eastern Conference Finals against the Ottawa Senators. The series resumes Wednesday night in Ottawa.
