NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk State women’s basketball team has received a No. 13 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament, facing No. 4 seed Maryland on Saturday, Mar. 22 in the event’s first round.
The selection marks the Spartans’ highest NCAA Tournament seeding in program history.
The NCAA Tournament selection committee revealed the full bracket during the official selection show on ESPN, with Norfolk State ending up in the Birmingham region. The Spartans (30-4, 14-0 MEAC) and Terrapins (23-7, 13-5 Big Ten) will face off at the XFINITY Center in College Park, Md.
Norfolk State earned its third consecutive MEAC Tournament title and fourth in program history on Saturday with a 68-56 win over Howard. Kierra Wheeler was named the MEAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player, while head Coach Larry Vickers received Most Outstanding Coach honors.
Maryland enters the NCAA Tournament following a 98-71 loss to Michigan in the Big Ten Quarterfinals. Average 79.9 points per game as a team, the Terrapins are led by junior guard Kaylene Smikle – averaging 17.7 points per game.
Saturday’s gametime is to be determined. The matchup will mark the first ever meeting between the two schools.
