Chiefs Beat 49ers 31-20; Super Bowl 54 Champs

[Miami,Fl] The KC Chiefs had to wait 50 years to win the second Super Bowl in franchise history and after beating the San Francisco 49ers 31-20 in Super Bowl 54, they would tell you that it was truly worth the wait.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes led the Chiefs from a 20-10 4th quarter deficit, which also included 2 interceptions that could’ve proved costly if the Chiefs weren’t able to get it done. For his efforts, Mahomes was named MVP and  is only the second Chiefs QB to be named MVP (Len Dawson in Super Bowl IV-1970) but also only the 2nd African-American Quarterback to be named MVP(Doug Williams, 1987 with the Washington Redskins) and is also the third- youngest Super Bowl MVP overall, trailing only Marcus Allen and Lynn Swann. He also became the youngest quarterback in NFL history at 24 years old.

Mahomes finished 26-of-42 for 286 yards, three total touchdowns (two passing, one rushing); with his two interceptions Patrick joined Tom Brady and Terry Bradshaw as the only players to win Super Bowl MVP despite throwing multiple interceptions.

Mahomes wasn’t as great as he was in his previous games, but in the Super Bowl, he proved that you just need to be great when you have to be.

It was also a historic night for head coach Andy Reid as he had to wait 21 years to win his first super bowl. His only other appearance in the Big Game was a 34-31 loss to the New England Patriots in 2004.

“I’m not sure it’s all sunk in,” Reid said, “but it’s awesome.”

Reid had infamously had the title as the best regular season coach-that couldn’t win the Big One. But after Sunday night, no more.

“He’s one the greatest coaches of all time, and he already was before this game,” Mahomes said. “But he deserved this.”

After leading 10-7 in the first half, the Chiefs saw why the 49ers were in the Super Bowl as they tied the game 10-10 at halftime and eventually took a 20-10 lead in the 3rd quarter after capitalizing off  Mahomes interceptions. 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo began making his case for Super Bowl MVP after a flawless 3rd quarter ending  with a TD toss to Fullback Kyle Juszczyk. And a TD run by Runningback Raheem Mostert.

Garoppolo (219 yards, TD, 2 INT) and the 49ers tried, but obviously, it was the Chiefs night.

During their 20-point comeback in the 4th quarter, Chiefs RB Damien Williams scored 2 TDs: One to give them the lead, and the other to secure the Super Bowl victory, The only other player to come close to making such an impact in the Super Bowl was John Stallworth when his 73-yard TD gave the Steelers the lead and his 45-yard pass lead the way to their 31-19 victory over the LA Rams in the 1979 season.

The Chiefs are now 2-1 in Super Bowls while the 49ers failed to get their 6th Super Bowl victory (which would’ve tied them with the Steelers and Patriots) and are now 5-2 in Super Bowls.
