Howard University’s Adjunct Union and Lecture’s Union, in alliance with SEIU Local 500, have announced plans to strike if an agreement is not made with University by Friday, March 18th. Citing unfair labor practices, the strike will commence Wednesday, March 22nd. Union leaders claimed they were scheduled to meet with the University administration on Friday, but that communication has now “gone silent”.

This academic year at the storied “Mecca” has been particularly newsworthy, but sadly, for all the wrong reasons. In September 2021, the University experienced a cyber attack. Student protests and sit-ins erupted on campus in October due to accusations of inhumane living conditions including rats, roaches, and toxic mold. After 33 days of protest, an agreement was reached between student activists and the Administration. Details of the agreement were not made public.

The winter Omicron wave delayed the start of Howard’s spring semester by 3 weeks. And last month, the school was among several HBCUs that received credible bomb threats that disrupted classes and campus activities.
