Washington, DC—Vince Iwuchukwu posted a career-high 25 points and 10 rebounds as Georgetown survived a late Providence rally to win 80-79 on Saturday night at Capital One Arena.
Early in the first half, Providence seized momentum with a series of explosive plays. After a back-and-forth start, Stefan Vaaks drilled a deep three-pointer and Jamier Jones threw down a crowd-silencing alley-oop dunk, giving the Friars a five-point lead and energizing their side. Georgetown responded at a crucial moment: Malik Mack snapped a three-minute scoring drought by drilling a 15-foot jumper, then charged to the rim for a three-point play to cut the deficit to 14-11. Moments later, Kayvan Malready powered through traffic for a tough layup, bringing the Hoyas within one at the under-12 media timeout. These swings set the tone for a tightly contested opening half.
Oswin Erhunmwunse scored on a putback, and Mack answered with a pull-up jumper after the timeout as the game became a defensive struggle. Williams drove through traffic and finished a tough layup to put the Hoyas up by 2. Georgetown built its lead to seven when Vince Iwuchukwu threw down a powerful dunk to conclude a 7-0 run, forcing a Providence timeout. Georgetown consistently fed the ball inside to Iwuchukwu, who finished baskets in the paint and drew fouls to get to the free-throw line.
Georgetown increased its lead to 12 points by making four of its last six shots. Its stingy defense, including a shot-clock violation, helped the team take a 10-point lead into halftime.
Halftime: Georgetown 43, Providence 33
Georgetown led at the half. It shot 54 percent from the field, while Providence shot 42 percent. Georgetown had nine assists; Providence had five. Georgetown scored 18 points off turnovers; Providence had seven.
Providence opened the second half with a 9-0 run, capped by a deep three-pointer from Vaaks and a determined drive from Jaylin Sellers. Suddenly, the ten-point halftime lead was gone. The Friars were locked in, making shot after shot as Capital One Arena grew tense. Sellers drained another three to tie the game at 47. The Hoyas tried to stem the tide. Malready broke through for a bucket, but Providence would not slow down. Vaaks answered immediately, and then Ryan Mela swished back-to-back threes to give Providence a seven-point advantage before the under-12 timeout. Georgetown finally found a response as Malik Mack finished a tough layup to cut the deficit to three, but the Friars’ surge had put the Hoyas on their heels.
Game action then went back and forth with a three-pointer by Sellers, answered by a three-pointer by Williams, followed by a dunk by Jones and another three-pointer by Williams. Providence went up by five after a Jones three-point play. Inwuchukwu sparked a 10-0 run for Georgetown with two dunks to put them up by five with 2:38 left in regulation. Sellers hit another three-pointer to snap Providence’s scoring drought with a minute remaining. Georgetown failed to convert on its next possession, but Sellers missed a three-pointer to put Providence ahead.
Georgetown tried to score on its next possession to put the game away, but Malready missed a layup. On Providence’s next possession, Jones drove to the basket, drew a foul, and made two free throws to tie the game. Afterwards, the ball went out of bounds off Georgetown. However, Georgetown regained possession and ultimately secured the victory.
Keys Factors In The Game:
Georgetown used its size advantage to win the points in the paint battle 46-22 and recorded 20 assists to Providence’s 13. The Friars’ smaller lineup and stretches of foul trouble left them struggling to protect the lane, allowing the Hoyas to dominate inside. However, Georgetown was outrebounded 38-25. Meanwhile, Providence committed 22 turnovers, its most since 2019.
Malready scored 12 points off the bench for Georgetown. Caleb Williams and Mack each scored 11 points. Jeremiah Williams scored 10 points and had a team-high five assists for Georgetown. Sellers led Providence with 21 points, shooting 5 for 10 from three-pointers. Jones added 19 points. Mala scored 17 points, converting 3-for-5 on three-pointers, and Vaasa scored 11 points.
