The Major League Baseball Non-Waiver Trade Deadline never fails to disappoint. There are always trades that are made, with the contending team getting top talent from the non-contending team in exchange of less talent and prospects. And occasionally, there’s a surprising team that will make a bold move that will have you saying whoa!

There was one team who caused that whoa! This year, and it surprisingly was the Pittsburgh Pirates. (Yes, you did read that right)
When you think of a team that would make bold trades, you never put the Pirates in that sentence because quite frankly, they never do it. They’ve always had the philosophy of not ‘mortgaging the future’ for now. (although it was stated that the Pirates were in serious pursuit of P David Price in 2014) Apparently GM Neal Huntington got the green light to make 2 key moves that will help this team now as they’re only a week from a season-long 11-game winning streak that turned their season around.

While most of you were sleeping, the Pirates acquired relief pitcher Keone Kela from the Texas Rangers for a pitching prospect and a player-to-be-named-later. And then the shocker came when they won the Chris Archer Sweepstakes, sending P Tyler Glasnow and OF Austin Meadows to the Tampa Bay Rays, and once again, a Player-To-Be-Named-Later. Kela has 24 saves and will probably be the set-up man for closer Felipe Vasquez and the left-handed Archer (3-5, 4.31 ERA) is expected to benefit from a change of scenery while joining a young Pirates rotation. He also has 2 All-Star Appearances on his resume’. He’s what the Pirates need for a possible run to the postseason.

Other Deadline Moves-The 2nd place Atlanta Braves also made a huge move as they acquired Pitchers Kevin Gusman and Darren O’Day from the Baltimore Orioles for prospects, the NL West-leading LA Dodgers for infielder Brian Dozier, the 2nd place Milwaukee Brewers acquired infielder Jonathan Schoop from the Orioles, and the NL East-leading Philadelphia Phillies acquired C Wilson Ramos from the Rays.
