Howard University

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) uncovered its men’s and women’s track & field weekly accolades where Howard University saw a trio of Bison acknowledged for their outstanding performances at the 2023 Rod McCravy Invite, hosted by the University of Kentucky. The announcement came Wednesday afternoon.

All-American senior Jessica Wright (Durham, N.C.) and junior Zachary Hawkins (Loganville, Ga.) earned MEAC Track Athletes of the Week while Mikyla Rodgers (South Huntington, N.Y.) took home the league’s Women’s Field Athlete of the Week.

The North Carolina native competed in a pair of events where she placed top 20 in the country. In the 4×400 relay, she guided the squad to a MEAC-best 3:39.15, which sits 14th fastest in the nation. Individually, Wright took fourth in the 400-meter dash, clocking in at a conference-best 54.13 (16th in the nation).

Hawkins finished runner-up overall in the short hurdles (60-meter) behind former Bison standout Dylan Beard, producing a MEAC-best 7.95 in the final round (47th in the nation).

Rodgers claimed second place in the weight throw, tossing a league-best 19 meters (62’4”), which ranks 50th in the country. North Carolina Central freshman Lamont Victoria was named MEAC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week.

On Jan. 20-21, HU’s road trip continues in Columbia, S.C., for the Carolina Challenge, hosted by the University of South Carolina.

Saint Augustine University

The Saint Augustine’s women’s basketball team lost another conference game on the road to Johnson C. Smith. The Lady Falcons were again missing sophomore, Lauren Banks, who is dealing with lingering concussion symptoms. The Lady Falcons struggled to find offense and lost 60-41. The Lady Falcons were led by Taniyah Greene and Ariyanna Brown with 15 and 14 points respectively. The Lady Falcons will host Claflin University Saturday, Jan. 21

The Saint Augustine’s men’s basketball team lost its fourth straight CIAA contest to the Johnson C. Smith University Golden Bulls 93-58. The Falcons drop to 5-11 on the season and 2-5 in the conference. Christopher Hill and Nemo Johnson led the Falcons in scoring with 10 points apiece. The Falcons will host Claflin University Saturday, Jan. 21

Wiley College

The Wiley College men’s basketball team will head back to New Orleans for a three-game Gulf Coast Athletic Conference pod at Southern University at New Orleans Friday through Sunday.

The Wildcats will open with a rematch against Rust College at 2 p.m. Friday, January 20. They are looking to avenge a 74-68 loss on January 14. On Saturday it will play Fisk University at 2 p.m. It will close with the host Knights at 7 p.m. Sunday.

The Wiley College women’s basketball team will return to New Orleans for its second Gulf Coast Athletic Conference pod at Southern University at New Orleans Friday through Sunday.

The Lady Wildcats, ranked #14 in Week 2 of the Urban Media Today Top 25 HBCU Basketball Poll, will open with No. 25 Rust College at noon on Friday, January 20. They will look to avenge a 71-59 loss on January 14 at Dillard University. On Saturday, it will play Fisk University at noon. Wiley College will finish with the host SUNO at 5 p.m. Sunday.
