Panthers’ Rally Falls Short at Miami
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Scoring runs of 18-2 and 17-3 for Pitt were not enough as the Panthers fell to Miami 66-58 Sunday evening at the Watsco Center.Tre McGowens scored a team-high 18 points and dished out a team best seven assists, while Kameron McGusty scored 19 points and shot 53% for the Hurricanes. After falling behind 46-26 with 14 minutes left, Pitt cut the deficit to 51-47 but could get no closer.

The Hurricanes (10-5, 2-3) beat Pittsburgh for the seventh time in a row. The Panthers (11-5, 2- 3) failed to build on their victory Wednesday at North Carolina, which ended a 22-game road losing streak in the ACC.
Miami raced to a 16-0 lead but allowed the Panthers to pull even at 18. The Hurricanes made four of their last five shots over the final 3:28 to seal the win. Sam Waardenburg had two big baskets down the stretch and finished with 10 rebounds. DJ Vasiljevic scored 13 points for Miami.
Chris Lykes, the Hurricanes’ leading scorer this season, scored 12 points but fouled out with eight minutes left.
Terrell Brown scored in double figures, recording 10 points and grabbing four rebounds. Justin Champagnie tallied eight points and pulled down a game-best 11 rebounds while also pocketing a game-high three steals.

BIG PICTURE
Miami: Waardenburg and Vasiljevic played 40 minutes for the Hurricanes, who have only eight healthy scholarship players.
Pittsburgh: The 52.9% from the field from the Hurricanes was the first game the Panthers allowed a team to shoot higher than 50% on the season. Pitt entered the contest 9-4 on the year when holding teams under 50%.
UP NEXT
Pittsburgh plays host to No. 13 Louisville on Tuesday. The Panthers lost 64-46 when the teams met Dec. 6.
Miami plays at North Carolina State on Wednesday. The Hurricanes won the last time they played there two years ago.
