SHAW TO HOST BREAST CANCER AWARENESS GAME THIS SATURDAY VERSUS LIVINGSTONE

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University football team will host Livingstone College in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Conference Southern Division contest on Saturday, Oct. 14 at Durham County Memorial Stadium. The game will kick off at 1 p.m. In addition, the game has been tagged as Breast Cancer Awareness Day as fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game in recognition of October being National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The Series / Last Meeting: Saturday’s game will mark the 28th time the Bears and Blue Bears will meet on the gridiron. The two teams met last season during the 2016 campaign in Salisbury, N.C. where Shaw suffered a 23-12 loss to the Blue Bears.

 

In that contest, the Bears tallied 319 total offense (134 rushing, 134 passing) while LC produced 356 (163 passing, 193 rushing). Shaw finished with 11 penalties worth 147 yards and two turnovers while being outscored 3-of-4 quarters that led the defeat.

 

Last Time Out: The Bears (2-4, 1-2 CIAA) enter Saturday’s game coming off a 24-21 loss to Fayetteville State last weekend in Fayetteville, N.C. FSU nailed a 30-yard field goal with four seconds remaining in the contest to take the victory over Shaw, leaving the Bears with a 0-1 start in division action.

 

Senior quarterback Darron Downing (Portsmouth, VA) completed 11-of-19 passes for 79 yards and one touchdown while senior wide receiver Trevante Long (Greenbelt, MD) registered four receptions for 37 yards and a score and junior running back Michael Sherman(Powder Springs, GA) rushed for 66 yards on 12 carries.

 

Sophomore Devon Hunt (Rockingham, NC) recorded a game-high 13 tackles (eight solo), one break up and a tackle for loss while sophomore Eric Walker (Miami, FL) added nine tackles (four solo) and senior Andrew Cash finished with eight tackles (five solo) and two tackle for losses.

 

The Bears are fourth in the division running’s as Winston-Salem State (4-2, 2-1 CIAA, 1-0 South) is currently in first place, following Saint Augustine’s (2-4, 2-1 CIAA, 1-0 South) being second and Fayetteville State (2-4, 1-2 CIAA, 1-0 South), third.

 

Shaw concluded the game just 3-for-10 in third down conversions and was 0-for-4 in field goals compared the Broncos who connected 8-of-13 in third downs and 1-4 in field goals.

 

Livingstone: The Blue Bears (0-6, 0-3 CIAA) have not won a game this season as they are 0-1 in the South after falling to Saint Augustine’s thanks to a late field goal that prevailed the Falcons over LC by the score of 30-29 on Oct. 7. The Blue Bears finished with 416 total yards, including 255 that came from rushing led by Jarius Richardson who produced 124 yards on 26 carries and one score. Justin Ruffin ran for 99 yards on 10 carries while Xavier Longerbeam completed 13-of-25 passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns.

 

LC currently stands in sixth place in the Southern Division.

Shaw heads to Charlotte, N.C. to face Johnson C. Smith on Saturday, Oct. 22. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
