GREENSBORO, N.C. – The 15th-seeded Pitt women’s basketball team fell to No. 10 seed Virginia, 64-50, Wednesday evening in the first round of the 2025 Ally ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament at First Horizon Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C.
The Panthers wrapped up the 2024-25 campaign with a 13-19 ledger, including a 5-13 mark in ACC play.
Pitt had one of its best regular seasons since joining the ACC as it recorded its highest win total (13) since the 2016-17 campaign and the second-most ACC wins (5) since joining the league.
The Panthers also reached the ACC Tournament after posting a 4-4 ledger over the final eight games of the season.
As she did much of the year, graduate center Khadija Faye led the Panthers Wednesday with 15 points and 11 rebounds for her 17th double-double of the season. Notably, Faye’s 16 double-doubles in the regular season led the ACC.
Fellow big, senior forward MaKayla Elmore, netted 11 points on 3-of-5 shooting from deep in her final collegiate game. Junior guard Marley Washenitz joined Faye and Elmore in double figures with 10 points.
Defensively, Pitt held Virginia (17-14, 8-10 ACC) to just 7-of-26 (26.9 percent) shooting from 3-point range, while forcing 16 Cavalier turnovers.
How It Happened
Both teams came up empty on their first possession, before Elmore opened the scoring with a triple from the right wing. After a Virginia layup, Pitt went on a 9-3 burst to force a Cavalier timeout. Of note, Elmore nailed three triples over the first five minutes of action. Virginia closed the first quarter on a 9-0 run and held a 14-12 lead entering the second period.
The Cavaliers scored 10 unanswered to start the second frame, extending their lead to 12. Pitt then went on a 10-2 burst to close the half behind eight points from Washenitz. The Panthers faced a 26-22 deficit at the half.
Pitt was paced by Elmore and Washenitz in the first half as they combined for 17 of the Panthers’ 22 points.
Virginia scored six unanswered to start the third period, before a pair of Faye free throws opened the second half scoring for Pitt. The Cavaliers outscored the Panthers, 8-2, over the following three minutes of play to go up 14. Sparked by four-straight Faye free throws, Pitt went on an 8-2 spurt of its own to cut the deficit to eight.
Of note, Faye tallied 10 points over the first eight minutes of the third period after going scoreless in the first half. Pitt trailed, 48-36, entering the fourth quarter.
The Panthers were unable to cut into the deficit down the stretch as they traded baskets with the Cavaliers for the entirety of the final period. Pitt ultimately fell, 64-50, in its season finale.
