Norfolk State Athletics Announces Labor Day Classic Events

The Norfolk State University Department of Athletics is pleased to announce an exciting week’s worth of activities that will help kick off the 2023 Virginia Lottery Labor Day Classic, culminating in the Spartans’ season-opening football game against long-time rival Virginia State on Saturday, Sept. 2.

The week begins with the Battle of the States Labor Day Giving Challenge. From noon on Monday, Aug. 28 through halftime of the football game on Sept. 2, NSU and VSU will wage a friendly competition to see which school can secure the most donations from its alumni and fans. The winning university will be announced during the fourth quarter of the Labor Day Classic.

 

On Thursday, Aug. 31, NSU will host the Labor Day Classic Health Fest from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on campus, featuring, health screening and testing at the NSU Student Center. The free event will provide students with various health services to promote well-being while on campus.

From 6-8 p.m. on Aug. 31, NSU will conduct the Heels & Helmets “Football 101” clinic. The latter will feature an interactive introduction to football for women only and will be conducted by the Spartan football coaches. Registration for Heels & Helmets is $25 for general admission and $10 for students.

The members of the Norfolk State University Athletic Foundation will celebrate the kick-off of the 2023 season and Labor Day Classic weekend at their Meet & Greet at Tropical Delight, 4027 Bowdens Ferry Road in Norfolk.

A number of events highlight the schedule for Friday, Sept. 1 as kickoff draws closer. The 14th Annual Marty Miller Golf Classic begins at 9 a.m. at Bide-A-Wee Golf Club in Portsmouth. That afternoon, NSU will sponsor a pep rally and College Colors Day celebration on campus from noon to 3 p.m.

From 6p.m.-8 p.m., the NSU Office of Alumni Relations will host the Labor Day Social Hour at Roger Brown’s in Portsmouth.

Friday’s activities conclude with the Office of Student Activities hosting the Labor Day Gym Jam in Echols Hall from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. This event is for NSU students only, who have a ticket and current NSU student ID.

Then on Saturday, NSU and VSU will meet on the gridiron for the 55th time in their history, but first since 2019. Tailgating will begin at 10 a.m. for the 2 p.m. kickoff. Prior to the game, NSU will also host the Greek Stroll-Off between fraternities and sororities of the two universities at 11:30 a.m.

On Sunday, the Scott Dozier Cafeteria will host a gospel brunch starting at 10 a.m. NSU students will also have the opportunity to interact at the Spartan Park Cookout from 1p.m. – 5p.m. at the Spartan Gardens. The event is free for all NSU students.

To close out the Holiday Weekend, Coach Robert Jones and the NSU Men’s Basketball Team will host their annual Back to School Supply Drive on Monday Sept. 4 from 10a.m.-1p.m. or as supplies last. Free book bags and other school supplies will be distributed by the Men’s Basketball team in preparation for the 2023-24 academic year. Attendees will be able to enjoy bounce houses, face painting and opportunity to meet the team.
