Lady Tigers Hold Off Albany State For 66-64 Victory

ALBANY, Ga. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 66-64 victory over Albany State in a SIAC women’s basketball game on Saturday.

Benedict had a 12-point lead in the fourth quarter, and then held off a late Albany State rally. The Lady Tigers hit two free throws in the final two seconds to secure the victory.

Benedict moves to 8-15 overall and 6-10 in the SIAC, while Albany State falls to 7-14 overall and 4-11 in the SIAC.

Albany State had as much as a seven-point lead, 20-13, in the first quarter before the Lady Tigers scored the final seven points of the period to tie the game going into the second quarter. Benedict continued the run into the second quarter, scoring the first 12 points for a 32-20 lead. The Lady Tigers led 38-26 at the half. Benedict maintained its large lead in the third quarter and led 49-39 going into the fourth quarter.

Benedict had a 53-41 lead early in the fourth quarter before Albany State went on a run to eventually tie the game at 55 with 3:49 left. The Lady Golden Rams took a 61-58 lead with 1:14 remaining. A jumper by Taylor Christmas tied the game at 62 with 15 seconds left.

Albany State regained the lead, 64-63, on a layup with eight seconds left. Alaysia Nash tied the game with a free throw. After an ASU turnover, Christmas sank a free throw for the final score.

Nash and Ciara Hardy led the Lady Tigers with 16 points each, while Hardy also pulled down 11 rebounds for a double-double. Christmas added 15 points and Ghylissa Knowles chipped in 11 points.

Benedict is at Fort Valley State on Tuesday night.
