WASHINGTON (November 8, 2024) – Graduate guard Destiny Howell (Queens, N.Y.) scored a team-high 20 points and freshman guard Saniyah King (Washington) and graduate forward Kaiya Creek (Seat Pleasant, Md.) added 14 points and 10 points, respectively, to help the Howard University women’s basketball team edge out George Washington (GW), 69-66, in a nonconference game at Burr Gymnasium.
Howell, the 2022-23 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Year, was 7-of-17 from the floor. The graduate guard needs four points to reach the 1000-point plateau in her career. King had another fine game as the freshman added a team-high four assists and two steals to her team’s victory. Creek, who has come out strong, contributed eight rebounds to go along with her point total.
The Bison (2-0) took control early, bolting out to a 17-9 first quarter advantage and taking a 35-25 lead at the half.
The Revolutionaries (1-1) used a 19-9 run to get back in the game at the end of three quarters, tying the contest, 44-44.
From there, it became a tug of war with 10 lead changes and seven ties before Howard got some clutch points from Howell and King down the stretch to secure the win.
Junior Nile Miller (Haddonfield, N.J.) rebounded from a subpar first game to return to her specialty of defense, grabbing seven rebounds, blocking two shots and picking up two steals to go along with eight points on the offensive end.
Sophomore guard Janyah Bohanon (Cleveland) added seven important points off the bench.
GW was led by Gabby Reynolds, who led all scorers with 22 points. Mariona Planes Fortuny recorded a double-double off the bench and Paige Mott tallied 10 points in a losing effort.
NEXT UP: Howard continues its two-game home stand when it entertains VCU Sunday (Nov. 10) at 2 p.m., in Burr Gymnasium.
