JACKSON, Miss. | Shannon Grant led three players in double figures for Jackson State but it wasn’t enough as the Tigers fell 72-62 to Florida A&M at the Lee E. Williams AAC in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action on Monday night.
Grant finished with 18 points and six rebounds against his former school, while Jayme Mitchell Jr. added 11 points. Daeshun Ruffin chipped in with 10 points, five assists, and four steals in the loss.
Jackson State finished the night shooting 39.1 (18-of-46) percent from the floor and 21.4 (3-of-14) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 79.3 (23-of-29) percent from the free throw line. Meanwhile, Florida A&M finished the night shooting 43.9 (25-of-57) percent from the floor and 28.6 (8-of-28) percent from beyond the arc. They also finished the night shooting 70.0 (14-of-20) percent from the free throw line.
Jordan Chatman led Florida A&M (7-11, 4-3 SWAC) with 18 points and Milton Matthews chipped in with 17 for the Rattlers who won their fourth consecutive game and are just one game back of Jackson State in the standings. Kaleb Washington added 16 points and nine rebounds, and Roderick Coffee III added 12.
Inside the Numbers
Jackson State shot 31.6 (6-of-19) percent from the floor in the first half, missing all four of its three-point attempts. They also shot 75.0 (9-of-12) percent from the free throw line and trailed by just six points at the break (27-21). They shot 44.4 (12-of-27) percent from the floor and 30.0 (3-of-10) percent from beyond the arc in the second half. They also shot 82.4 (14-of-17) percent from the free throw line.
Meanwhile, Florida A&M shot 31.1 (10-of-32) percent from the floor and 28.6 (6-of-21) percent from beyond the arc in the first half. They also hit just one three-pointer in the first 20 minutes. The Rattlers shot 60.0 (15-of-25) percent from the floor and 28.6 (2-of-7) percent from beyond the arc in the second half. They also shot 76.5 (13-of-17) percent from the free throw line.
Florida A&M won the rebounding battle (38-29) and forced 17 turnovers while committing 18.
Game Notes
- Jackson State won every points from category on the night with the exception of second chance points (FAMU 16-5). The Tigers won in points off turnovers (14-12), points in the paint (28-22), fast break points (11-10), and bench points (13-6).
- Ruffin scored in double figures for the ninth time in 10 games this season.
- Dorian McMillian just missed a double double in the game, scoring nine points and grabbing eight rebounds.
- The loss at home is the first this season in four regular season games for Jackson State.
