NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State track and field programs have their sights set on the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships, kicked off Monday afternoon at William “Dick” Price Stadium.
The Norfolk State men’s track & field team looks to secure its third consecutive MEAC Outdoor title, winning by comfortable margins in 2022 and 2023. The achievement would mark the program’s first outdoor three-peat since earning seven consecutive championships from 2006-12.
The men’s team has produced several historic performances this outdoor season, most recently breaking two school records at the Penn Relays – Gidion Sigei took down his own conference mark in the 10,000 meters with a time of 29:11.76, before the 4×400 relay team completed a preliminary event in 3:05.57.
Several Spartans have earned strong rankings in the NCAA East Region in their respective events. Isaac Haywood sits at No. 14 in the triple jump, winning the event eight times this year, while Vincent Bond Jr. ranks No. 41 in the 400 meters.
The Norfolk State women’s squad earned runner-up honors at the MEAC Indoor Championships, nearly taking down Howard for the top spot. The Spartans are led by juniors Mercyline Kimaiyo and Leslie Young, the 2023 Most Outstanding Runner and Field Perfomer, respectively.
Monday’s action got underway at 1 p.m. with the men’s decathlon and the 10,000-meter races will wrap up the day that evening.
ESPN+ will live stream the final stretch of the meet on Wednesday, going on air at 1 p.m. EST.
