Cavs Have Called Inquiring about Spurs Leonard
It’s the NBA offseason and the attention are already beginning to focus on the Cleveland Cavaliers, Kawhi Leonard and of course, LeBron James.
According to ESPN and several reports, the defending Eastern Conference Champions have inquired about Leonard’s services, especially since he made it known that he no longer wants to remain with the San Antonio Spurs, but the reports also suggest that he wants to join the Los Angeles Lakers, a team who is also after the Cavs’ LeBron James, who is set to become a free agent now that the season is over.
It’s obvious that the Cavs do not want King James to leave, but the question remains whether they will give him his Max deal, or if he wants to remain in Cleveland for a 5th season. Reportedly, Lebron currently has only four teams on his list: The Cavaliers, Lakers, Houston Rockets, and Philadelphia 76ers.
Leonard is a 2-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year, a Finals MVP (2014) and a 2-time NBA All-Star and could give the Cavs a much-needed defender to complement LeBron and Kevin Love, but he could also complement LeBron and improve a Lakers team that is ready to contend now. They are prepared to create cap space to land James, Leonard, even Paul George and/or Chis Paul and would probably need to part ways with former rookie Lonzo Ball and Brandon Ingram to get it done.
But before the Lakers try to create their own Big Three, the Cavs are interested in re-creating one of their own. Time will tell as July 1st nears.
