James Harrison Retires ..Again

Veteran linebacker James Harrison retired from the NFL early Monday and it was like déjà vu: After a season in Cincinnati, Harrison retired, but then returned to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2014 when they struggled at his position. 3 years later (2017) Harrison asked the Steelers to release him. They granted his wish and he joined the New England Patriots in time for the Super Bowl run. But unlike last time, Harrison is not looking to make another comeback as he turns 40 in May.

“I’ve missed way too much for way too long…and I’m done.” Said Harrison on Instagram. “Many thanks to my family, coaches, the fans, and everyone who played a role in my football life.”

Harrison retires as the Steelers All-Time sack leader with 80.5. (84.5 overall) He also spent 2003 on the Baltimore Ravens practice squad.

Harrison’s break came in 2004 when he filled in for Joey Porter. Ironically, Harrison replaced Porter in 2007 and became a 5-time Pro Bowler and 4-time All-Pro. His best season was in 2008 when he set the Steelers single-season sack record with 16 and was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year as the Steelers advanced to Super Bowl 43. In that game, he set a Super Bowl record when he intercepted a pass and returned it 100 yards for a TD.

Harrison made 4 Super Bowls in his career, winning 2 with the Steelers.
