Howard Women’s Basketball Players earn Pre-Season Honors

             Four Bison Earn MEAC Women’s Basketball Preseason Honors

NORFOLK, Va. (October 23, 2019) – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) announced its 2019-20 women’s basketball preseason honors where Howard University witnessed four Bison receive recognition. The announcement came Wednesday morning during the annual basketball teleconference.

Four Bison Earn MEAC Women’s Basketball Preseason Honors (Photo Courtesy of Howard Athletics)Among the Bison recognized included seniors Sarah Edmond (Freeport, N.Y.), Ayonna Williams (Washington) and Imani Bryant (Berkeley, Calif.) and junior Jayla Thornton (Newark, N.J.).

After reaching 1,000 points during her junior campaign, Edmond was voted to the All-MEAC Preseason First Team. A year ago, the New York native scored a team-leading 15.5 ppg while being selected to the All-MEAC Second Team. She finished her third year producing seven 20- point performances, including a 27-point outburst against Siena (Nov. 19).

Williams enters her final season being named to the All-MEAC Preseason Second Team after finishing with 11.8 ppg and 3.8 apg a year ago. The D.C. product started all 31 games where she ranked among the conference leaders in several categories, including assists (4th), steals (5th) and free throw percentage (5th).

Bryant ended her junior campaign among the top defenders in the conference, earning her All- MEAC Preseason Third Team. Nationally, she ranked top 50 with 1.9 blocks per game in 25 contests played (15 starts). Last season, the California native recorded three double-doubles, including 16 points (season-high) and 14 boards (season-high) at Maryland Eastern Shore (Jan.7).

Entering her junior year, Thornton comes in as the league’s top sharpshooter after leading the conference in made three-pointers (97) while finishing top 25 nationally. The New Jersey product earned All-MEAC Preseason Third Team honors after finishing with seven 20-point performances, including a record-setting 33-point outburst at Savannah State (March 2).

North Carolina A&T State’s (NCAT) C’Coriea Foy was named 2019-20 MEAC Preseason Player of the Year.

Additionally, the conference unveiled its predicted order of finish where HU was projected to finish third overall.

NCAT was picked to win the conference title with 12 first-place votes, followed by last year’s tournament champion Bethune-Cookman.

In less than two weeks (Nov. 5), the Bison host LaSalle in their home opener. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. inside Burr Gymnasium.
