Howard Senior Spotlight Featuring Essence Bell

WASHINGTON (May 30, 2023) – Howard University rising junior Media, Journalism, and Film major, Spanish minor Sareyah Rudd caught up with recent graduate Essence Bell (Ocala, Fla.) from the women’s volleyball team for a quick Q and A session.

Q: What is your favorite part about volleyball?

A: My favorite part about volleyball is the excitement that comes with each point. Of course, with any sport you look for ways to score, but you never really know what to expect in volleyball (lol).

Q: How did you get started in volleyball?

A: I started playing volleyball by following in my sister’s footsteps. I was in seventh grade and originally started for fun, but in ninth grade, one specific coach saw such potential in me, and I never looked back.

Q: What kept you motivated?

A: While at Howard, my family was ultimately what kept me motivated. They kept me grounded and never let me forget my childhood goals. They are 100% who I do it for.

Q: If you were not competing in volleyball, what other sport would you do?

A: I would play basketball for sure. If you know, you know (lol).

Q: What are your plans after graduation?

A: I plan to continue my education and earn my master’s degree in counseling psychology.

Q: What is your favorite memory from Howard?

A: My favorite memory outside of getting a ring would be last year’s Green Wave Classic, hosted by Tulane University.

Q: What advice would you give future Bison?

A: My advice to future Bison would be to never lose sight because of current circumstances. Things will work out and fall into place.

Q: Who would you like to thank?

A: I would like to thank God, my family and every coach who has helped me along the way.
