WASHINGTON (February 8, 2022) – Howard University men’s basketball team rolled past Gallaudet (GU), 96-38, in the 12th installment of the Battle of the Bison.

With the victory, HU moved over .500 (11-10) for the first time since December 2021 while extending its winning streak to three.

All 11 Bison scored for Big Blue, led by redshirt sophomore Steve Settle, III (Glenarden, Md.) with 21 points on 9-for-11 shooting in the win.

“It was really good to see guys contribute off the bench,” said Howard men’s basketball head coachKenneth Blakeney postgame. “I was more impressed with us defending. That’s what I really wanted to see, along with share the ball and rebound. That’s how I want to see us play.”

Defensively, Howard held GU to less than 28-percent (15-of-54) from the floor while outrebounding Gallaudet, 50-33.

Both squads went back-and-forth early on until a pair of freebies from graduate guard Tai Bibbs (Chicago) ballooned the lead to double-digits with more than six minutes before intermission, 25-15.

From that point, Howard kept the pressure on and finished the half on a 14-2 run, 39-17.

After halftime, HU continued its hot shooting while pushing the margin to 37, thanks to a trey ball from Settle, 57-20.

Howard gradually increased the deficit, scoring 57 points in the second period; thus, cruising to victory.

Sophomore Jordan Wood (San Antonio) had a career-high 18 points, eight boards and three steals while newcomer Bryce Harris (Brentwood, N.Y.) produced 12 points and seven boards. Reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Week Kyle Foster (Hampton, Va.) netted 10 points in the victory.

“This game was an opportunity to test our mental more than physical,” Blakeney stated. “After playing a very challenging opponent last night at Delaware State, we didn’t get back until after midnight. I knew we were going to be tested mentally and our guys responded.”

For Gallaudet (2-19), Corey Smith registered a team-high nine points on 50-percent shooting (4-for-8) in the loss.

Saturday (Feb. 12), HU resumes league play against DSU inside Burr Gymnasium. Game-time is set for 4 p.m.
