Howard Men’s Basketball Holds Off Delaware State

DOVER, Del. (February 7, 2022) – Howard University men’s basketball team held off a scrappy Delaware State (DSU) Hornets squad on the road inside Memorial Hall, 69-64, while improving to 4-3 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play.

With the victory, HU moved to 10-10 overall while grabbing consecutive wins for the first time since November 2021.

Graduate sharpshooter Kyle Foster (Hampton, Va.) led the way with another impressive shooting performance. The Virginia native finished with 21 points on 50-percent shooting (6-of-12), all from behind the arc.

Both clubs were tied at 12 apiece after a trey ball from Foster. From that point, the Bison would go on a 14-6 run, capped off by a fastbreak layup by redshirt sophomore Steve Settle, III (Glenarden, Md.), and hold an eight-point advantage with under two minutes until intermission.

With under a minute left, DSU’s Myles Carter scored on a putback layup and cut the halftime margin to six, 26-20.

After the break, Foster delivered another long ball and gave Howard its largest lead with more than 14 minutes remaining, 41-30, but the Hornets refused to go away quietly.

Delaware State trimmed the deficit to a one-possession game on multiple occasions, but Howard withstood the Hornets’ late charge.

Down the stretch, Foster connected on his sixth three-pointer of the game with 17 ticks left and secured HU’s 10th victory of the season.

Graduate big man Randall Brumant (Houston) produced 13 points, two assists, two steals and a pair of blocks while six-time MEAC Rookie of the Week Elijah Hawkins (Washington) filled the stat sheet, ending with 11 points seven boards, five dimes and three steals in the win.

For DSU (2-17), they are still in search for their first conference win of the season (0-6). Carter had a game-high 24 points and nine rebounds while Martaz Robinson added 19 points and eight boards in a losing effort.

Tuesday (Feb. 8), Howard plays Gallaudet in their final nonconference game of the season. Game-time is scheduled for 6 p.m. inside The Burr.
