Eight Bison Receive ITA Scholar-Athlete Awards

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) revealed its 2023 Division I Men’s & Women’s Scholar-Athletes where Howard University had eight Bison recognized for their efforts off the court. The announcement came Monday morning.

“I am very proud of our young men and women,” said Howard Director of Tennis Nicholas Askew. “Our teams not only excel on the court, but in the classroom as well. A special thanks goes to our academic service support team for their endless help.”

Among the recipients included Alexandra Blackwell (Austin, Texas), Sifa Butcher (Pembroke Pines, Fla.), Daniel Dunac (Washington), Yemisi Ifederu (London, England), Gabe Knowles (Allentown, Pa.), Emnet Simunyola (Lorton, Va.), Selah Stibbins (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Pierce Westbrook (New Orleans).

To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, each Bison maintained a 3.5 or better grade point average (GPA) during the 2022-23 academic year.

Additionally, women’s team earned ITA All-Academic honors for accumulating a 3.2 or better team GPA during the 2022-23 academic year.

Collectively, nearly 2,500 Division I student-athletes were named an ITA Scholar-Athlete and just under 400 men’s & women’s tennis programs received All-Academic honors.
