ANNAPOLIS, Md. (February 1, 2020) – Howard University men’s track and field squad competed at the Navy Invitational II in nearby Annapolis, Md., where they secured three more spots at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Championships.

“We were very happy to get a chance to compete close to home this weekend before our big trip next week,” said Howard Director of Track & Field David Oliver after Saturday’s meet. “It was great to see our Howard administrators supporting the squad and getting an invite to compete at The Naval Academy is a big honor. We definitely represented ourselves well.”

In the men’s 200-meter dash, freshman Richard Ninamou (Louisville) and sophomore Kameron Davis (Miami) finished second (22.01) and third (22.07), respectively, with MEAC qualifying times.

Second-year runner Aariq Nixon (Baltimore) dominated his heat and led wire-to-wire in the men’s 800-meter run. The Baltimore product recorded a 1:54.91 mark while advancing to Landover.

Other notable performance on the track included sophomore Jermanie Byrd (Miami) placing third in the men’s 60-meter hurdles, clocking in a split second faster than Navy’s Hunter Wargo with an 8.30 (8.294) time.

In the field, newcomer Nnamdi Olebara (Bowie, Md.) continues to impress in his first year as a Bison. The Maryland native took third overall in the men’s shot put, tossing over 48 feet (14:65 meters).

“We finished in podium positions in quite a few events, but the young squad had a very an up and down day,” Director Oliver continued. “That’s expected growing pains when we’re trotting out a team of freshmen and sophomores.”

Next weekend (Feb. 7-8), the Bison will journey to Columbia, S.C. for the South Carolina Invitational, hosted by the Gamecocks.
