WASHINGTON (December 16, 2019) – Howard University men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams have reached the midway point of the 2019-20 season, setting new school records along the way. Although the Bison have been busy training and preparing for big meets week after week, head coach Nicholas Askew’s bunch have been equally active giving back in the community.

“Our commitment to serve is one of our top priorities,” said Askew regarding giving back to the community. “Taking moments out of our training and competing schedule to help those who in need keeps us grounded and aware of the needs of others.”

Before their meet against rival George Washington (Nov. 9), the men’s team participated in the “10 for 10” Black Men Feed D.C. Community project where all Howard male organizations united to provide over 500 sandwiches to the D.C. community.

The following week (Nov. 16), the women’s squad took part in the Feed The Homeless project, presented by Howard’s new organization Pretty Period, at the Rita Bright Family Youth Center in D.C.

Before the Thanksgiving break (Nov. 23), both squads helped in the 25th annual Project GiveBack where more than 2,500 grocery baskets were distributed to underprivileged families in the D.C. area.

“Over time, other people have said, ‘hey, I want to be a part of [Project GiveBack],’” said Ransom Miller III, founder of the Project GiveBack, to WTOP in an interview after the event. “Team work makes the dream work and there’s no truer statement than with an event like this.”

Howard returns to the pool in 2020 when they travel back to Baltimore to face UMBC in a duel meet. Saturday’s (Jan. 4) first race is set for 2 p.m.
